Systemic mastocytosis (SM) affects about 32,000 people in the U.S., characterized by abnormal mast cell accumulation. As co-lead UI designer and content strategist, I aligned the brand's vision with a digital platform aimed at informing and supporting SM patients and healthcare providers. Our campaign, "Its SMthing," creatively explores SM's symptoms and stories to foster community engagement.

Our research highlighted gaps in accessible, user-friendly information about SM. We designed the "Its SMthing" platform through iterative prototyping and user testing, focusing on intuitive design and interactive elements like quizzes and patient narratives. This approach aims to empower users with knowledge and support, bridging the gap between information and community for those affected by SM.

Designing for the It’sSMthing target market

The "Its SMthing" platform was developed through iterative prototyping, focusing on providing a comprehensive and accessible resource for individuals affected by SM. The goal was to offer clear, easily navigable information on symptoms, diagnosis, and living with SM, while engaging users through interactive elements like quizzes and patient stories.

During the design phase, emphasis was placed on visual clarity and user engagement. We incorporated intuitive navigation and visually appealing elements to enhance user experience, ensuring the platform catered to both patients and healthcare providers.

Creating a comprehensive and engaging platform

The final design of the "Its SMthing" platform integrates multiple avenues to deliver a cohesive and enriching user experience. Each component was designed to cater to the needs of patients and healthcare providers, fostering a supportive community and providing valuable resources. The platform includes comprehensive information on SM, interactive tools for engagement, and resources to support both patients and their caregivers.

Website: The platform includes a cohesive structure that guides users through information about SM. The landing page features dynamic visuals and direct links to essential resources. Key sections like "Symptoms," "Diagnosis," and "Living with SM" provide detailed insights, supported by patient stories and interactive tools to foster community engagement.

Patient Stories: A dedicated section for patient stories allows users to learn from others' experiences. These stories offer support and shared experiences, making the platform a comprehensive resource for those affected by SM. The narratives provide insights into living with SM, helping to build a supportive community.

Events: An events section was created to help users find and connect with their community. This section lists upcoming events, both virtual and in-person, where individuals can engage with others who have similar experiences. It fosters a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for support and information exchange.

Quiz for Doctor Discussion Guide: To help users feel more confident when discussing their symptoms with doctors, we included an interactive quiz. This tool helps individuals assess their symptoms and provides a structured way to articulate their concerns during medical appointments. It empowers users to have informed and productive conversations with their healthcare providers.
